How New Jersey Regulates Memory Care
For dementia care, the New Jersey regulator to know is New Jersey Department of Health, Division of Certificate of Need and Licensing; a memory care unit typically runs under a residential care license from that office, with extra requirements for locked or alarmed exits, dementia training and overnight staffing. State site
Under New Jersey rules, a secured dementia unit can operate inside these license categories: Assisted Living Residence; Comprehensive Personal Care Home; Assisted Living Program (services in subsidized housing). Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.
Before you tour, confirm: New Jersey assisted living residences may offer dementia care units under their license, with added staffing and training rules. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.
