New York has 581,776 veterans, 321,599 of them 65 or older (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024). About 426,500 New York residents 65 and older were living with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2020, and 776,000 family members provide unpaid dementia care, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. How New York Regulates Memory Care
In New York, oversight of secured dementia units falls to New York State Department of Health, Division of Adult Care Facilities and Assisted Living, which licenses the host community and sets the added rules on exit security, caregiver dementia training and awake night staff. State site
The New York license categories a memory care wing can sit under are: Adult Home; Enriched Housing Program; Assisted Living Residence (ALR); Enhanced ALR (EALR) and Special Needs ALR (SNALR) certifications; Assisted Living Program (ALP). Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.
Before you tour, confirm: In New York, memory care requires a Special Needs Assisted Living Residence (SNALR) certification. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.
