05 · Oregon rules

How Oregon Regulates Memory Care

In Oregon, oversight of secured dementia units falls to Oregon Department of Human Services, Safety, Oversight and Quality Unit, which licenses the host community and sets the added rules on exit security, caregiver dementia training and awake night staff. State site

The Oregon license categories a memory care wing can sit under are: Assisted Living Facility; Residential Care Facility; Memory Care Community endorsement; Adult Foster Home. Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.

Before you tour, confirm: Oregon requires a Memory Care Community endorsement for facilities that provide memory care. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.

To read a community’s survey and complaint history, search the ODHS licensing page for its name before you sign anything. Search reports

The family home

Selling or renting an Oregon house often pays for memory care. VA counts sale proceeds, so plan the timing with the claim.
