How Colorado Regulates Memory Care
For dementia care, the Colorado regulator to know is Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Health Facilities and Emergency Medical Services Division; a memory care unit typically runs under a residential care license from that office, with extra requirements for locked or alarmed exits, dementia training and overnight staffing. State site
The Colorado license categories a memory care wing can sit under are: Assisted Living Residence (ALR); Secure environment designation for memory care. Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.
Before you tour, confirm: Assisted living residences that provide a secured environment for residents with dementia must meet additional CDPHE rules. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.
To read a community’s survey and complaint history, search the CDPHE licensing page for its name before you sign anything. Search reports
