How Ohio Regulates Memory Care
For dementia care, the Ohio regulator to know is Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Survey and Certification; a memory care unit typically runs under a residential care license from that office, with extra requirements for locked or alarmed exits, dementia training and overnight staffing. Under Ohio rules, a secured dementia unit can operate inside these license categories: Residential Care Facility (assisted living); Memory care units within residential care facilities. Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.
Before you tour, confirm: Ohio residential care facilities that offer specialized dementia care must disclose it and meet training rules. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.
