How Kentucky Regulates Memory Care

In Kentucky, oversight of secured dementia units falls to Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Office of Inspector General, which licenses the host community and sets the added rules on exit security, caregiver dementia training and awake night staff. State site

The Kentucky license categories a memory care wing can sit under are: Assisted Living Community (certified); Personal Care Home (licensed). Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.

Before you tour, confirm: Kentucky assisted living communities that serve residents with dementia in a secured setting must meet added certification standards. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.

To read a community’s survey and complaint history, search the CHFS OIG licensing page for its name before you sign anything. Search reports
