How Virginia Regulates Memory Care

For dementia care, the Virginia regulator to know is Virginia Department of Social Services, Division of Licensing Programs; a memory care unit typically runs under a residential care license from that office, with extra requirements for locked or alarmed exits, dementia training and overnight staffing. State site

The Virginia license categories a memory care wing can sit under are: Residential Living care license; Assisted Living care license; Special care units for dementia. Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.

Before you tour, confirm: Virginia assisted living facilities with safe, secure environments for dementia must meet special care unit rules. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.

To read a community’s survey and complaint history, search the VDSS licensing page for its name before you sign anything. Search reports
