How Texas Regulates Memory Care
In Texas, oversight of secured dementia units falls to Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Long-Term Care Regulation, which licenses the host community and sets the added rules on exit security, caregiver dementia training and awake night staff. State site
Under Texas rules, a secured dementia unit can operate inside these license categories: Type A (residents can evacuate without help and don't need routine overnight attendance); Type B (residents may need help evacuating or need overnight care); Alzheimer's Certification for memory care units. Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.
Before you tour, confirm: Texas assisted living facilities that advertise Alzheimer's or memory care must hold an Alzheimer's Certification from HHSC. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.
To read a community’s survey and complaint history, search the HHSC Long-Term Care Provider Search for its name before you sign anything. Search reports
