How Maine Regulates Memory Care

In Maine, oversight of secured dementia units falls to Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Licensing and Certification, which licenses the host community and sets the added rules on exit security, caregiver dementia training and awake night staff. State site

The Maine license categories a memory care wing can sit under are: Residential Care Facility (Levels I-IV); Assisted Living Program; Alzheimer's/dementia care units. Ask which one the community holds and whether its dementia unit is listed on that license.

Before you tour, confirm: Maine residential care facilities with Alzheimer's/dementia units must meet added rules. Also ask how many caregivers are on the memory care floor at night and what dementia training each one completed.
